Mathew Lucas is an Executive Patent & Trade Mark Attorney with more than 25 years’ experience across all aspects of patent prosecution, oppositions, freedom-to-operate clearances, litigation support, and strategic commercial advice.  Mat focuses on providing attorney services to the life sciences industries.  He has expertise in drafting, complex patent prosecution, strategic advice, FTO, contentious disputes, and commercialisation. 

Highly respected by colleagues and clients, Mat’s focus is pharma/biopharma, chemistry and chemical engineering, material sciences, diagnostics, biochemistry/biotech, ag-tech, food-tech, and med-tech.   

Mat is an experienced patent draftsman, having drafted more than 500 patent specifications across a wide range of technologies. 

Mat completed his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Melbourne in 1997, followed by post-doctoral research at the University of Illinois (at Chicago) and the University of Adelaide.  His research work included studies in radical chemistry, polarity reversal catalysis, and the development of diagnostic technologies and therapeutic compounds, including contributions to a faecal immunochemical test developed with Flinders Medical Centre and industry partners. 

Mat joined Pearce IP after more than 25 years at Davies Collison Cave, where he progressed from trainee to Equity Partner and Principal.  During this time, he co-founded the firm’s Singapore office.  

Mat is a member of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) and a fellow of the Institute of Patent and Trademark Attorneys (IPTA), and outside of work is an avid gardener, fish breeder and enjoys a hit of golf.
